Brad Bull shortsighted on the fundamentalist Takeover of the Southern Baptist Convention
Brad Bull of East Tennessee and Carson Newman College had a worthwhile piece at Baptist News Global a couple days ago on Gen x responses to the toxicity in the Southern Baptist Convention and responses to it.
Read the piece. While I get his point about the fall and what Marney calls the cussedness in all of us, I think it is a false comparison to dismiss the whole matter because the humanity of the moderates came out in the process. To paraphrase Bush 43 Between King and The Civil Rights marchers as compared to the Birchers, the Klan and the White Citizens Council, God is not neutral.
For certain it appears with all his thoughtfullness, Bull is unaware of response to the definitive biographer of LBJ on the matter of Coke Stevenson and the Texas Regulars. You can google that up. LBJ was no choir boy but thank God he defeated the white horse riding Coke, Pressler's family candidate, in the 1948 Senate Race even if a few votes in Duval County were in question, ballot box 13.
Harold Bloom said in 93 the tragedy in the SBC is the result of bible thumping rightwing political strategists masquerading as having religious conviction.
Bull made no mention of last week's Sarah Posner piece in the Nation about Fundamentalist leadership of the takeover dancing with the devil re abortion politics. While Bull comes down with Ken Chafin he allows Pressler and Jesse Helms and their Council for National Policy more charity than they deserve.
So God Bless Bull and his marriage therapy offices in Knoxville Tn. But I remain with Bill Moyers, Bloom, David Currie, Bill Leonard, and lately Robert Jones on the driving forces of the fundamentalist takeover of the SBC. The evidence is in the infamy of the Trump base, its poison on the body politic, a direct outgrowth on the tactics and many shared personalities of the fundy takeover.
For certain some confused people in the pew got their feelings hurt and anecdotes are spread everywhere, but my God lets dont say George Truett and Frank Norris are all pablum cause Norris mighta got his feelings hurt along the way.
