Will Campbell died last night

Will was 88. I have made tributes on the facebook wall of my friend at UVA Charles Marsh and at www.baptistlife.com/forums Baptist faith and practice.

And the facebook wall of Collinsville PTO where Vivvee Monteagudo and Tyler Coker their 8th grade year 99 or so were on stage with Will in Montgomery in a Pacers event.
I was introduced to Will at Furman in the early 70's by the chaplains LD Johnson and Jim Pitts. I called Pitts, the son of Nixon's barber, a few minutes ago from Ft. Payne and told him a Randy Owen story. We laughed a little near tears with a few memories of Campbell and the things he said.

Will was the only white man to go the Lorraine MOtel the evening Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated in April 1968. I hope that registers with Vivee and Tyler and they understand it someday and tell their grandchildren. They can also tell them they knew me if the want to.

Here is what the New York Times said:

Mary Anne "Peepsie" Cole's Tea Party Indicted

Mary Anne Cole and the Fox family go way back.

Her Brother Fowler, a member of the John Birch Society, and my Dad's Brother Fremont Pickerin Fox were lifelong friends though Uncle Free knew better than to join the Birchers. Uncle Free was a great American and a Triple dipper but he earned every penny of it. Nobody could ask for a better Uncle than Uncle Free.

And I enjoyed singing Gospel music at the Helton Reunion on Walden's Creek outside Pigeon Forge Tennessee at the Helton Reunion in 86 or so with Fowler. Our cousin Todd Helton of the Colorado Rockies wasn't there that year, but three years earlier my Dad, Billy Fox, preached the annual reunion sermon with Presidential candidate George McGovern, Nixon's 72 opponent, in the audience.

It was a sweet time in Jesus.

But here is where Mary Anne Cole, the niece of former JSU prez Houston Cole missed the mark.

Hal Crowther, columnist for John Grisham founded Oxford American magazine scorches Mary Anne and her beloved tea party in the Summer 2013 issue. I read it yesterday in Rome Georgia where Mary Anne first got the Gospel at West Rome Baptist church, which in the 60's was precinct of the fundamentalist Jerry Vines, like Ft Payne's Bobby Welch a president of The Southern Baptist Convention.

Crowther writes in his review of Anniston Star H. Brandt Ayers new book on his take of 50 years of writing about Southern Politics, and Atlanta native Tracy Thompson's Mind of the South Revisited: nor who could deny "our native tea party is the old White Citizens Council by a bunch of old Wallace voters reinvented in a new line of goofy costumes only a slight only a slight improvement over Klan Robes."

Pretty Strong but Crowther like me is a fan of Furman grad Marshall Frady, the man who wrote the Wallace bio the TNT series of the late 90's featuring Lt. Dan, Gary Sinise starred.

I saw the politics of Peepsie Cole first hand in March of 93 in an Inquisition of Samford President Tom Corts; one of the grandest men to breathe the air of Alabama in the 20th century. Martin Luther King, Jr and Judge Frank Johnson Carl Elliot, Wayne Flynt and Ron Casey and Bailey Thompson are some others. And Brandt Ayers.

Peepsie's good friend Eunie Smith of the Eagle Forum; Eunie's Bircher husband Albert Lee Smith gathered almost a thousand fundamentalist Southern Baptist preachers and laymen to take it to Corts for 90 minutes plus.

Corts survived. They went after my novelist friend Vicki Covington. She once wrote about Daddy's first cousin Max Helton, former Chaplain to Nascar so we aren't talking about Commonist Sympathizers here.

Last Friday Peepsie was on the front page of the Ft Payne, Bama Times Journal above the fold. The Next day that honor went to my friend Jorge Segura, Salutatorian of the Collinsville HS Class of 2013, where my Mother graduated in 1940 along with Mary Katherine Reed, the first woman in the county to earn a doctorate.
In the 19 teens my grandfather James Columbus Jordan ran for school superintendent of Deekalb County as a Lincoln Republican. Thank God I come from different NE Bama gene pool than Cole and the Albert Lee Smiths.

Cause you see, Cole and Eunie Smith woulda deported half the Collinsville soccer team this year if they had their chance pulling Deacon Gov Bentley back to the 1960's. As President John Kennedy said "Let the Word Go Forth" that it was Peepsie's great friend Eunie Smith who intreoduced Scott Beason to Kris Kobach the Harvard Kansas lawyer who wrote the tea Party Bama draconian Immigration Bill. Google Mother Jones April 2012 "self deportation" to read about Eunie and Peepsie's "Christian Values"

And read my blog about Selma and the man who said: "We won when we started walking".

The good news is I turned 60 May 18 and Peepsie is a good ten years older than I am.

So in about 7 to ten years or less, me and her and Eunie and SBC Deacon Gov Bentley want be walking around in Bama any longer.

   Just do the actuarials.

I hope what follows in Terrapin Hills and Collinsville, Al brings a little more to the table than Eunie and Peepsie did.

    God I hope so.

And God Bless America and the Collinsville soccer team; Momma and Grandfather Jordan, Apple Pie, the Flag, Oscar Romero, Lincoln and the Boston Red Sox, and those two promising Georgia Crackers on the cover of SI.com last week who are taking MLB by storm.
