Bull Sheet in Greer South Carolina

I was there Wedsnesday night for the bull shit extravaganza in the Old Train Depot. LBJ was there in the fall of 1960 on train tour for him and the Kennedy ticket. But it was a different crowd with Timmons of the Furman basketball arena family, and the Horry County Myrtle Beach christian nationalist super Trumper Russell Fry , SC 4th and 7th district US Congressman. The moderator for this two person shit show was Joey Horton, the Lee Atwater disciple and early morning host for the Answer radio in Upstate SC.

Congressman fry  was the first to invoke the word bullshit. He thought he was cute to mimic his hero Donald Trump who is using it a lot. I echoed his bullshit with a mildly loud "bullshit" of my own from the crowd.

Timmons is a product of Christ Church Episcopal in Greenville but his culture politics are those of Bob Jones, North Greenville college and whatever else sucks is expedient from the Trump Base . Marty Cohen's book Moral Congress explores the political history of the SC 4th including the Heritage Foundation  that flipped it to Trey Gowdy unseating of Bob Inglis. Before that it was clearly purple..

Tommy Brittain is a former Chair of the Wofford board of Trustees who has established a fairly powerful law firm in Myrtle Beach with his son and daughter. Tommy's sister is one of the more influential Methodist ministers in North Carolina. Tommy was a strong friend and supporter of Tom Rice, the Republican who voted for the Trump  impeachment proceedings and then primaried by the bull shit artist Fry, born and raised in a cinder block house.
Timmons and Fry  are the kinds of Republicans of the Trump base now passing as mainstream in the Carolinas. I'll take Tommy Brittain, the best of Wofford and other good Methodists in any vote over Bull Shit artists.
The chair of the event Weds told me he thought his fellow Bob Jones grad Asa Hutchinson may be the most qualified of the GOP field. I tend to agree though his politics are short sheeted early in. In the straw poll of 160 ballots Weds night. I voted Will Hurd as first choice and Asa for the number two spot. I think I was the only vote for Hurd.
It is my understanding SC is an Open Primary in the GOP Presidential race. You just can't vote in both primaries.
For the sake of the moment I hope a multitude of South Carolinians will hold their nose and vote in the GOP primary for favorite son Tim Scott. His mantra of Faith in America has a better ring to it than Bull Shit and Sons a bitches. Kinda elevates the neighborhood a little if you know what I mean.

Plinth

This was a new word for me watching PBS Southern Storytellers last night. The segments featuring Natasha Tretheway are strong, very strong. I was introduced to her a few years ago on NPR and her Poem Miscegenation. Good use of the word Mississippi, with analogies, corollaries to Faulkner's Joe Christmas of Light in August. That novel thirty years ago was the first time I can say I began to understand him

Here is a link to her thoughts on the Plinth :   https://www.pbs.org/video/natasha-trethewey-returns-to-new-orleans-8ubjbr/

It is strong, about all you need to know in five minutes or so. Watch both segments if you don't watch the whole thing, both segments on her. Makes Ron Desantis, Moms for Liberty look like unlearned white trash fools, and raises questions of whether Nikki Haley deserves to be on the board of Clemson Trustees, much less a Presidential candidate.
